Many figures of national and international politics have close ties to the bank. Durão Barroso, everyone’s favorite former European Commission buffon, was a BES consultant before he became Prime Minister. Other figures include a former Minister of Economy and Innovation; a former Minister of Public Works and current president of EDP, the electricity company; a former Minister of Interior Administration; a former Minister of Economy; parliamentarians, among others. These figures belong mostly to the Socialist and the Social-Democrat parties, the power duopoly that alternates in power, keeping up the farce of capitalist democracy while implementing similar policies. The bank thus has a firm foothold in the “centrão” (big center)."
